Visiting Essaouira: a practical guide
Essaouira feels like the opposite of Marrakech: calm, breezy and easy to explore on foot. Many travellers come for a day, but most wish they had stayed at least one night to enjoy the evening light on the ramparts and the quiet morning port.
Getting there
The drive from Marrakech takes around 2 h 45 min across the plains, with a stop at an argan cooperative. The Medina is pedestrian, so drivers stop at the parking areas by the town gates; we check the closest one to your riad.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is possible but means more than five hours on the road. With a night in Essaouira you can walk the ramparts at sunset, eat fresh fish at the port and continue the next day back to Marrakech or along the coast to Agadir.
When to go
Essaouira has a mild climate all year, cooled by the Atlantic trade winds, which also make it one of Morocco’s best spots for kitesurfing. Bring a warm layer: evenings can be cool even in summer.
