Planning a Sahara trip: a practical guide
The dunes of Merzouga are far from Marrakech, about 550 km, which is why the classic trip takes three days: the High Atlas and Aït Benhaddou, a night in the Dades valley, the Todra Gorge, then a night in the desert before the return. From Fes the drive is shorter, around 7 to 8 hours, and many travellers continue to Marrakech to cross the whole country.
When to go
Autumn and spring are the best seasons. Winter days are pleasant but desert nights are cold, so bring warm layers. Summer is very hot in the desert, and we plan early starts and late visits.
