Visiting Marrakech: a practical guide
Marrakech combines a vast medieval Medina with modern districts and easy access to mountains and desert. The secret is to explore the old city on foot and keep a car and driver for everything outside the walls.
Arriving and getting around
Marrakech Menara Airport is about 6 km from the Medina, around 15 to 20 minutes by car. Cars cannot enter most Medina lanes, so drivers stop at the nearest accessible point to your riad. Inside the Medina everything is on foot; Gueliz and Hivernage, the modern districts, are reachable by car to the door. See our Marrakech airport guide.
How many days?
Two full days cover the Medina, the palaces and the gardens. Add a day for the Atlas Mountains or the Agafay desert, and two or three more if you want to reach the Sahara or the coast at Essaouira.
Day trips from Marrakech
- Atlas Mountains: Imlil, Ourika or Asni, less than 1 h 30 min away.
- Agafay desert and Lalla Takerkoust lake: about 40 km, perfect for a relaxed day and a desert sunset.
- Essaouira: about 2 h 45 min to the Atlantic, best with a night there.
- Ouzoud waterfalls: a long day trip to Morocco’s most impressive falls.
- Aït Benhaddou: over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, ideally as the first stage of a journey to the Sahara.
Practical tips
- Take a licensed guide for your first visit to the Medina; unofficial guides who approach visitors work outside the law.
- Keep some cash for the souks, cafés and tips.
- Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summer afternoons are very hot.
